Dr., Hough reviewed President Keiser’s address – noting that pages 13 and 14 concerned GLS.

Dr. Hough has asked Dr. Moseman to contact the other COE department heads and the six other academic colleges concerning using GLS as a lab school by the other university faculty. Initial first step may be as substitutes in the classroom – service/research in the classroom.

We discussed the need to concentrate on a few programs to begin the changes needed to happen to turn GLS into a true lab school.  E-Mints program in the 3rd and 4th grades is the initial first step. In order to progress smoothly in the right direction we need to avoid the “shot gun effect” – if you do a whole lot real fast, nothing occurs.

We need to develop an action plan to move toward “laboratory school” – evaluation task force report gave a list of recommendations of which this was included – involving all those being part of the plan.  Recommended timeline for action plan – Draft in December, revised in Spring, set in stone before school is out.

We discussed a primary center, perhaps one that could operate year round, and getting volunteers for large classes.

Dept. of Ed. Admin. faculty under the direction of Dr. Bill Agnew will oversee the research of the e-mints program regarding achievement/motivation, partents, guidance/counseling, benefits for at-risk.  Other schools - Willard, Nixa, Springfield - have the program.

Linda Azeez gave a report on e-mints.  The 3rd and 4th grade parents met with teachers and Dr. Hough and Dr. Craig regarding the program.  Most parents, especially those with children in the 3rd grade were receptive to the program. Mention was made that some 4th grade parents opposed the program, noting that their children were learning just fine without this approach.

GLS will have a new Ed. Admin. Intern – Kathy Decherry.  Spfd. Schools now want to state an EAD admin. Internship program, as well.

We discussed using GLS during the summer months for summer school – use of public school moneys to teach their kids, summer school camp (both academic and athletic), or “Kid’s College”.  Brain storming led to some excitement for a new program at GLS. The FAC agreed that we need to look into this more.

Dr. Hough announced that GLS is not longer considered “private” in the eyes of DESE. We are now classified as “experimental.”.  This change happened August 20, 2001.  One of the effects of this change allows GLS to use other University faculty in our classrooms – they do not need K-12 certification – thus allowing “joint appointments.”
