GREENWOOD CHEERLEADING
2008- 09
Sponsor: Dr. Melody LaPreze
Coach: Shailey Kelly
Activities:
During the soccer and basketball seasons the cheerleaders put locker signs on the team members’ lockers for each game/match. They make hallway signs for all other sports throughout the entire school year. The cheerleaders plan and perform pep assemblies for Homecoming, LPA, fall sports kickoff, and spring sports kickoff. They are also in charge of the LPA Spirit Week events.
In July 2006 the Varsity squad attended UCA Cheer camp at Missouri State University. The camp had over 900 participants with more than 50 squads ranging in size from Greenwood being one of the smallest schools all the way up to and including squads from 5A schools. Performing a dance they had learned at the 4-day camp, the Greenwood Varsity squad competed in the Camp Champ Dance competition and took home the 1st place trophy! They also won a spirit stick every single day–bringing one home, and they won the “BIG BANANA” award on the third day–this is a highly-coveted award that is given to only one squad per day! Christian Oliver and Samantha Myears were also selected as All-Star Cheerleaders! The Greenwood Varsity was quite successful at camp!
The 2006-07 Varsity squad also conducted their annual Jr. Jays Camp where they taught a cheer and a dance to 36 Greenwood elementary students. These Jr. Jays then performed their routine for a huge crowd of Greenwood athletic fans, parents, grandparents, and the visiting team’s fans. They were awesome as they cheered and danced to High School Musical selections. What a fun way to introduce elementary kids to the fun of cheerleading, while cheering on the Greenwood Bluejays basketball team!
In December 2006 the squad members decided to “adopt” an OACAC Head Start pre-school class and purchase items from the class’s wishlist rather than buy gifts for one another. The wishlist included everything from socks and gloves to markers, playdough and a MagnaDoodle. The girls each donated $20+ and the preschool class’s wishlist was fulfilled with items totaling well over $325. Then these items were then put in a big wrapped box and the squad paid a visit to the Head Start class. The cheerleaders put on their uniforms and went to provide “cheer”–yes, pun intended! They presented the gifts to the kids and then performed chants, cheers, tumbling, and stunts for the class. They were so popular, the other 3 classrooms asked if they could come to their rooms also! Because this facility is a “gift-in-kind” organization, the girls’ time and mileage and gifts were matched by outside funds, and the Greenwood Varsity’s generosity of wishlist gifts and especially their time resulted in the OACAC Head Start receiving approximately $3000 worth of goods and funds! That’s amazing work for 9 young ladies who were being great Greenwood Public Service/Affairs Ambassadors!
Alumni News:
Two 2005-06 Greenwood Varsity cheerleaders went on to cheer at college. These are believed to be the first Greenwood cheerleaders to go on and cheer on college squads. Brooke Reynolds cheered on the 2006-07 Drury Panthers basketball squad. She cheered at both men’s and women’s basketball games and was a flier with her stunt group. Abby LaPreze (2005-06 captain) cheered on the 2006-07 University of Missouri-Rolla Miners basketball squad. She, too, cheered at both men’s and women’s basketball games, stunting as a flier with stunt groups and also partner-stunting with a single male base. Abby has also been selected as a member of the Miners 2007-08 squad. Since the fall sport she cheered for at Greenwood was soccer, Abby has never cheered for football, and she is quite excited to cheer for football for the first time!
