Fifth grade is an eMINTs classroom utilizing inquiry-based methods to master the curriculum. Students are challenged to take their thinking (and learning) to a higher level, as they transition into the middle school years. Social Studies topics focus on U.S. history, with extensive units on state studies and the Civil War; Science covers life (systems in living things and populations and ecosystems), Earth (the solar system and beyond and the solid Earth), and physical (matter and energy, and color, light and sound)populations and ecosystems, the solid earth, and light and sound) areas; Math incorporates problem-solving techniques in all operations through an “everyday math” approach; and Communication Arts builds students' abilities in reading, writing, and word study while expanding their use of a wide variety of research materials and resources.
