The Pink and White high school girls tournament began in 1972 by Greenwood Laboratory School. The first tournament director was Dr. Jim Jester. Dr. Jester started the Pink and White soon after Title IX was passed in hopes of forming equal rights for girls in sports with a tournament comparable to the Blue and Gold boys tournament.
The tournament was also designed as a means for smaller schools to compete with the bigger schools. Having trouble filling spots for sixteen teams, Greenwood had to look to Kansas City and St. Louis to find available girls teams. The Pink and White evolved into one of the premier tournaments in the state. Dr. Jester felt that, "the Pink and White has been one of the motors that started girls basketball in Missouri." We thank him for starting such a wonderful and rich tradition.
Greenwood's Lady Jays continue to be the host team. The Pink and White is currently held at McDonald Arena on the Missouri State University Campus and will move to Hammons Student Center in the future when McDonald Arena becomes a recreational center for university students.
