Dr. Sheri Slater, Director of K-12 Instrumental Music

The band program begins in the sixth grade. Students are introduced to a musical instrument of their choice, and over the course of the year, master the basics. The sixth grade performance at the Spring Concert at the close of the school year. Emphasis is placed on learning how to take proper care of the instrument and developing a good basic embouchure and correct technique.

During the seventh and eighth grade years, students are offered band as an elective course. The emphasis during the course is switched to further developing technique, learning scales and how music is structured, and learning to be part of ensemble. Students have the opportunity to attend junior high solo and ensemble festivals and apply for Junior High All-District Honor Band. Both the 7th and 8th Grade Bands usually perform once each semester, at both the Winter and the Spring concerts.

High School Band is offered to those students who are in ninth grade or older. It is an elective course that fulfills the fine arts credit requirement for graduation. Students in the band learn to develop their musical skills to the best of their ability. At this level, students have the opportunity to try out for the All District and All State honor bands, as well as participate in solo and ensemble festivals in the spring.
