The Missouri State University Literacy Center is pleased to announce an opportunity to colleges and their respective departments to join in an effort to support the Family Literacy Centers, a 501C3 organization in southwest Missouri. The Center’s focus is literacy for both children and adults in reading, mathematics, and technology, while leading participants into positive academic and life skills achievement.
Practicum students from the College of Education provide assessment and intervention for K-12 students in reading and mathematics. Approximately 120 students participate in the Summer program and 40 students in the fall and spring semesters. The project is presently housed at the Springfield Community Center. Additional sites are planned for the future.
The Family Literacy Centers are being established by community partners, many of whom represent diverse inner city congregations. Although some of the partners are religious in orientation, they have agreed that the centers will be open to all and will not be venues for the promotion of religion.
Presently, the Centers have been identified as sites for Missouri State University students and faculty to conduct research, practicum, and service learning experiences in a diverse setting. Currently, Missouri State University participation includes the following departments: Special Education, Communication Sciences and Disorders, and Reading. The Department of Early Childhood Education plans to participate in the near future.
Additionally, this opportunity can help your various departments reach their goal of satisfying requirements of the Professional Education Committee's Strategic Plan for Diversity.
