Criteria for Identifying Professional Education Courses
A course is designated as a Professional Education Unit (PEU) course if:
*a significant focus of the course is to teach or model how best to present academic content
to birth-16 students, or
*a significant focus of the course is to bring about awareness of the growth and
development of birth-16 students as they seek to learn academic content, or
*a significant focus of the course deals with issues of schooling, or
*a significant focus of the course is related to assessment and intervention in the
development of birth-16 students, or
*the department views the course as one which should be taught by PEU faculty,
instructors who remain interested and active with school environments and content, or
*the department believes that their accrediting agency would expect the course to be
taught as a professional education course and/or by PEU faculty.
The consequences of a course being designated as a PEU course are that:
*the catalog description of the course must include a PEU designation (phrase or symbol),
and
*every faculty member teaching a PEU designated course must be a PEU member.
