Early Learning Series 2016/17: Classroom Management & Proactive Strategies for Preventing Challenging Behaviors in Early Childhood

Creating an Environment to Support Children's Social and Emotional Development- The foundations for learning are laid well before a child enters kindergarten. Research tells us that the pre-kindergarten years provide crucial opportunities for educators to influence children's growth and development. The classroom environment is a critical component in fostering children's social and emotional development. How the room is arranged, how routines and schedules are designed, how classroom rules are established and maintained-all contribute to building a strong learning community where children feel welcome, safe and eager to learn. Just as adults do, children thrive in an environment that they feel they have helped design to meet their needs and where they feel safe and valued as a contributing member of a community.
