Functional Behavioral Assessment and Behavior Intervention Plans
Dr. Terry Bigby will provide participants with a problem-solving process for addressing student problem behavior through a functional behavioral assessment. A functional behavioral assessment looks beyond the behavior itself and looks at identifying significant, pupil-specific social, affective, cognitive, and/or environmental factors associated with the occurrence of specific behaviors. This broader perspective offers a better understanding of the function or purpose behind student behavior. Behavioral intervention plans based on an understanding of "why" a student misbehaves are extremely useful in addressing a wide range of problem behaviors. The first day of this workshop will focus on a variety of techniques and strategies to identify the purposes of specific behavior. The second day will focus on taking the observations made in the FBA and turning them into a concrete plan of action for managing a student's behavior.
Four Square Writing
Four-square writing is a method of teaching basic writing skills that is applicable across grade levels and curriculum areas. It can be applied for the narrative, descriptive, expository and persuasive forms of writing. Good writing is modeled and cultivated through the use of a graphic organizer. Prewriting and organizational skills are developed, ideas are generated, rough drafts are created, writing conventions are refined through editing and revision and finally presentation is made in a published form. The visual and kinesthetic graphic organizer encourages students to focus on sentence detail and word choice. Additionally, the visual organizers help students conceptualize, understand, and structure a piece of written discourse successfully. Participants in this workshop will be taken through the entire process and will leave with a finished product that can be easily transferred to classroom practice.
