Strong instructional methods prepare you for your career
In our middle school education program, we are committed to providing you with high-quality field placements at Greenwood Laboratory School or area schools that offer you hours of hands-on learning. Your student teaching and practicum hours will not only give you confidence in your skills, but also the knowledge and experience you will need when you have a classroom of your own.
As part of your program requirements, you will be required to student teach. Student teaching runs in two blocks of eight to nine weeks each, both equaling a full semester. You will be required to apply for student teaching one full semester before you start, and during your time student teaching you will be supervised by a University supervisor and your cooperating teacher. From your freshman year onward, you will receive advising and student teaching guidance through the College of Education advising office.
You will also be required to complete a 30 clock-hour practicum through your SEC 302 course, and another 30 clock-hour practicum in MID 439. Both of these placements will be at Greenwood Lab School on the Missouri State campus, or at local middle schools if there are too many students for Greenwood Lab School to accommodate.
During your practicum, you will also be given the opportunity to work with middle school students in area schools including Springfield Public Schools, Nixa, Ozark and Willard. For your SEC 302 practicum you will observe and work with students one on one. In MID 439 you will get to work in interdisciplinary teams where you can directly apply what you are learning through your coursework and from your middle school field experiences.
