Supervised Practice

A student explains his list of goals and challenges for student success during a student affairs leadership retreat.

Apply your skills with hands-on training

Put your know-how to the test with in-the-field experiences.

You'll need to complete 300 hours of supervised practice in student affairs.

How do I complete my practice experiences?

According to CAS Standards, you'll need to complete two distinctive supervised practice experiences.

You can use your graduate assistantship and practicums to fulfill this requirement.

Full-time professionals can meet the requirement through SAE 747 by completing a reflective project parallel to a master’s thesis.

Specific provisions of our practicum policy include the following:

  • As a graduate student, you are responsible for negotiating practicum placements with potential practicum supervisors. Developing a meaningful practicum experience will require that you begin networking with potential site supervisors before the semester that you begin your practicum.
  • Your negotiated agreements should be formalized in a learning contract along with your site supervisor.
  • You will be required to establish a weekly practicum schedule of approximately 5-7 hours.

Choose a timeline that works for you

There are a couple of ways you can complete your practicums.

  1. A one-year long practicum or special project related to your job. This option is ideal for full-time students.
  2. A two-semester practicum. For this option, you will need to get approval from your practicum site supervisor and the SAHE program coordinator.

You should expect to complete around 8 hours per week at your practicum site.
